About

Whether it is your first time on a downhill bike or you want help with steeper lines, MTB lessons in Ruka with Ruka Bike School take you from the basics to confident riding on one of northern Finland’s most varied mountains. The school also leads guided trail rides around Ruka, so you can learn the local network with someone who knows it well.

Ruka Bike School is the resort’s summer riding school, run alongside the Ruka ski school. Its downhill courses and private bike park lessons are taught by FMBIA-certified bike park instructors – the Finnish instructor scheme created with the Finnish Ski Area Association to train coaches in skills teaching, bike set-up and bike park safety. Courses are aimed at everyone from young riders to adults, beginners to advanced.

What they offer for MTB lessons in Ruka

  • Downhill mountain bike courses for beginners and more experienced riders
  • Bike park private lessons for one to ten people, tailored to your goals
  • Guided mountain bike tours on the best local trails, with technique tips on the way
  • Guided e-bike adventure tours and private guided rides for your own group
  • Bike and DH bike hire available at the resort; some trips include bike hire

Beginner downhill courses focus on the fundamentals that make bike park riding safe and enjoyable: a balanced, attacking position, braking control, looking ahead and riding berms and small rollers on the easiest flow trails. More experienced riders can book a private lesson to work on jumps, steeper technical sections or simply getting faster with less effort. Guided trail tours are a different experience – instead of lifts, you pedal through the forest and fells around Ruka with a guide who chooses suitable routes and shares technique tips along the way.

Families are well catered for, with guided trips for both children and adults and a family-friendly area at the base of the bike park.

The riding around Ruka

  • Ruka Bike Park – lift-served flow and technical trails from the summit, served by the Village-2-Valley gondola and Village Express chairlift.
  • Ruka–Kuusamo trail network – around 180 km of varied, marked mountain bike trails through hills and forest.
  • Hossa and Syöte National Parks – further afield in the region, for longer days in the wilderness.

When to ride

Ruka Bike School operates in the summer bike season, when the bike park lifts are running; check the resort website for this year’s opening dates. Midsummer brings almost endless daylight in Kuusamo, while late summer and early autumn bring cooler air, fewer insects and the famous ruska colours on the fells.

Getting to Ruka

Kuusamo Airport, with flights from Helsinki, is about 30 km from Ruka – about a 25-minute drive, with airport buses timed to flights. By road, Ruka is about 25 km north of Kuusamo town and about three hours’ drive from Oulu. The bike school office is at the resort’s rental shop in Ruka village.

Tips for your ride

  • For downhill lessons you will need a bike park lift ticket and a suitable mountain or DH bike – your own or hired at Ruka.
  • Book private lessons and guided tours ahead, especially around midsummer and in July.
  • Check each guided trip’s description to see whether bike hire is included.
  • Carry a light rain jacket and insect repellent – northern weather can change quickly.
