Desert Sports is a bike shop and outfitter in Terlingua, next to the Terlingua Ghostown. It is the main spot for Mountain Bike Rentals in Big Bend, and is listed as a bike outfitter by Big Bend National Park.
Rentals
A mountain bike costs $65 a day, or $300 for five days, then $50 for each extra day. A helmet, pump and spare tube come with the bike. You can bring your own helmet, saddle, shoes and pedals, and the mechanics will fit them for you.
Shop and shuttles
The shop does repairs and sells parts and supplies, which matters in an area where the next bike shop is far away. The website also has a page on shuttles in Big Bend and notes on mountain bike rides in the area.
Guided rides
Desert Sports no longer runs guided tours itself. It points riders who want a guide to Further Adventures, which uses the shop as its base.
Good to know
The best riding season is the cooler months. In summer the heat limits rentals, so call ahead. Reservations for rentals and shuttles can be requested through the website or by phone.
