MTB Lessons in Helsinki – Coach Elina Technique Courses

Small-group mountain bike technique courses in the Helsinki area

MTB school Finland, Europe

About

For anyone who has just bought a mountain bike or wants to feel safer on rooty forest paths, MTB lessons in Helsinki with Coach Elina offer a friendly, unhurried way in. Her summer technique course mixes skills practice with real trail riding in the capital region, in groups small enough for everyone to get personal feedback.

Coach Elina is the coaching brand of Mendi Oy. Elina is a certified mountain bike instructor (maastopyöräilynohjaaja) and bikepacking instructor through Suomen Pyöräilynohjaajat ry, the Finnish cycling instructors’ association. Alongside the bike qualifications she is a strength coach and personal trainer, so expect plenty of practical advice on body position, balance and staying comfortable on the bike as well as pure technique.

What she offers

  • “Maastopyöräilyn perusteet” – a 2.5-hour mountain bike basics course of guided technique practice and trail riding
  • Groups of no more than eight riders, with individual feedback for each participant
  • Practical riding tips plus safety and equipment advice
  • Tailored courses for companies, groups of friends and clubs by arrangement
  • Suitable for beginners and riders with a little experience – no top fitness required

Each session starts with the essentials: checking that your bike and helmet fit, finding a balanced, active riding position and learning to brake and shift with control. From there the group moves on to climbing, descending and picking a line through roots and rocks, before putting it all together on a section of real trail. The pace is calm and encouraging, and the small group means Elina can watch each rider and give tips that fit their own style.

It is a good fit for adults returning to cycling, runners and hikers looking for a new way to explore the forest, and anyone who has ridden a little but never had a lesson. Groups of colleagues or friends can book their own course, which makes it an easy team activity on a summer evening.

The riding around Helsinki

  • Central Park mountain bike trail – a 16 km intermediate route through Helsinki’s Central Park from the Laakso riding arena to Paloheinä, with rocks and roots to test your skills.
  • Nuuksio National Park – lakes and forest just outside the city, with around 30 km of cycling routes and good public transport links.

When to ride

The 2026 courses run on summer evenings in July and August, when Helsinki’s long light makes after-work riding easy. The city’s Central Park trail is open from May to the end of November, so there is plenty of time to practise what you learn before the snow arrives. Custom group courses can be arranged on other dates.

Getting to Helsinki

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is about 20 km north of the city centre, roughly half an hour by train or car. The exact meeting point within the capital region is sent to participants after registration, and most trailheads in the area are reachable by public transport or a short drive. Ferries also connect Helsinki with Tallinn and Stockholm.

Tips for your ride

  • Bring your own mountain bike and helmet – bikes are not provided on the course.
  • Dress for the weather: Finnish summer evenings can turn cool and damp in the forest.
  • Check whether your employer’s wellbeing benefit (such as Epassi) can be used for payment – ask Elina before booking.
  • After the course, ride the Central Park trail in both directions to practise climbing and descending on the same terrain.
