Biking.ie runs Mountain Bike Tours in Wicklow from its base at Ballinastoe Wood near Roundwood, one of Ireland’s best-known mountain bike trail centres. The team also guides at Ticknock in the Dublin Mountains, so a ride is easy to fit into a city break in Dublin.

The business is run by Tarja, one of the first mountain bike tutors in Ireland. She holds Scottish Mountain Bike Leader Awards (SMBLA), the leader scheme that Cycling Ireland now runs in Ireland as the MBLA (Mountain Bike Leader Award).

Guided rides at Ballinastoe and Ticknock

Riders can pick a relaxed leisure tour, ideal for newer riders who want to learn the trail centre, or an expert tour for confident riders who want to get the most out of the flowing singletrack and rocky sections. The private “Flow Rider” tour is for groups of one to eight riders and is also sold on the big booking sites. Guided tours start from €115.

Bike rental, lessons and camps

Biking.ie also rents mountain bikes, including e-bikes, at the trailhead, and runs bike lessons and youth camps. After the ride, the Trails Café at Ballinastoe is the place for a coffee and a chat about the trails.

Ballinastoe is about 45 minutes south of Dublin by car. Book tours and lessons in advance, especially at weekends and in summer, and ask about bike hire when you book if you are travelling without your own bike.
